The Fortress rises up on a hill just outside Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, its walls characterize and at the same time they perfectly blend with the surrounding landscape.
Mont'Alfonso enjoys a privileged point of view, from here you can see many of the hallmarks of the garfagnino environment such as mountains or its dense forests from which it derives its name: Garfagnana, in fact, comes from the Latin Carfinium, the dark forest.
Garfagnana has a very special environment that embodies all the completely different characters of the two mountain chains that surround it: Apuane Alps, rugged and rocky, which pounce on the nearest coast of Versilia; Apennines, gentle and green, that form the border with Emilia . The territory, about 60% covered by forest, offers a wide variety of tree species now largely protected by the Regional Park of Apuan Alps, the National Park of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, and by the Nature Reserves of Orecchiella.
