South Gate

South Gate: guesthouse facilities
The South Door is the second entrance to the Fortress: it was used as a possible way of escape and, in the event of a siege, it allowed the artillery, positioned on the glacises outside, to retreat to safety within the walls.
The Door is made up of a wide entrance with a vaulted ceiling and the guard corps rooms on the ground floor while the troop quarters were on the floor above.  In more recent times these rooms were used as a dwelling by the farmer who lived at the Fortress.
The building has been renovated and is used as guest quarters with a small apartment and bedrooms which can host small groups of visitors.
